If you know what to expect, you won’t be disappointed. Here, I’m presenting to you 3 books and 2 movies that I like, and I’ll tell you what to expect, without revealing big spoilers.

BOOKS

  1. Whimsical Tendencies51mpauxo7zl

This book and many more of Suzanne’s C. Rogers are the perfect blend of fantasy and classic romance. As far as I’ve tried, the stories are very sweet and they make you grow attached to the main characters. The writing style also fits perfectly with the storyline.

Whimsical Tendencies starts with Cypher being called to the headmaster’s office because, once again, she did something wrong with her magical abilities. She’s feisty, has a mysterious past, and she hates the Cauldians, the people who have taken over her country.

Things take a different turn when she accidentally meets a Cauldian gentleman.

These are the type of books you can leisurely read before bedtime and that will make you believe in the power of love. Maybe if you lost faith in love, you should try out these books.

Note: these are fantasy romance books so don’t expect much action.

2. Furies of Calderon

I stumbled upon this book in my Google Play recommendations and I must say it’s worth reading. The story doesn’t start out strong, but when you get to the action part, you will be amazed, or at least, that’s how I was. I kept turning page after page until the mission was over. The suspense moments are very-well developed so I’m definitely adding it to my favorites.

You’ll get into an interesting and tricky mission with Amara and Fidelias, and you’ll find out that their magical powers are called furies—a name probably given because those powers seem to be sentient, yet they can be called only in certain conditions.

From people who master their furies well to those who are growing impatient waiting to develop them, the world of Calderon is magical yet dangerous at the same time.

Note: the main characters are changed with almost every chapter so sometimes the book may seem like a collection of short stories.

3. The Moth Saga

This series is simply perfectly designed and written. The plot is strong, the chapters are short and flow cursively, the characters are well-described, the dialogues and descriptions are exactly where and when they need to be—it’s a series done by the book.

It depicts two places, one, Timandra, soaked permanently in the strong light of the sun while the other one, Eloria, is in permanent night. While the light part seems to live European medieval times, the dark world has many Japanese culture elements, something which adds to the fascinating world of Moth.

It starts with Torin, an 18-year-old boy who seems feeble but has a strong sense of justice. Although living in the bright Timandra where everyone would presume only the good and peaceful dwell, evil men lurk in Torin’s village and they seek nothing but stirring up a war between the two lands (so far I don’t know if they’re purely fanatics or there is some underlying reasoning why they want this).

Torin gets entangled in this mess as he tries to stop their evil doings, and the worst part is that the dark world now believes he is the perpetrator who must be punished.

Okay, I think I gave enough spoilers here :)).

The only thing I would have to comment is that at certain times, the relationship between the characters can be a bit annoying, at least that’s how I felt. I find Bailey kind of annoying, and I hope Torin will lose interest in her (it sounds mean, I know).

MOVIES

  1. Shazam!

I loved this movie! Since the very first time I saw the trailers, I knew I must see it. I’m a fan of lighthearted shows that bring in a good mood.

If I were to put it simple, it would be like this:

  • 65% humor – 35% seriousness—actually, I don’t think I’m wrong when I say you’ll hardly find 5 minutes of pure seriousness in this movie
  • 60% family movie – 40% superhero movie—it focuses more on the power of friendship and healthy family relationships rather than save-the-world fights.

It centers around the life of Billy Batson who is supposed to be an orphan. If I understood the movie correctly, he gets the power of Shazam mostly because the old wizard had no choice. After testing over 50 people, he was running out of time and someone had to take his powers as soon as possible (you’ll see why).

So the boy was not exactly the most pure-hearted kid who deserved the power. After getting the powers, Billy makes sure he has great fun before thinking of helping others.

Special appreciations:

  • Despite being so full of humor and jokes, the villain here is not only very serious but has a well-done background as well. He is bad but not mindless.
  • The movie has a consistent voice from beginning to end. It starts with a mix of funny&serious mood, it continues so, and it ends so.
  • The actors were excellent! They seemed to enjoy playing their roles.
  • The jokes are light perfect for all ages.

Conclusion: funny and heartwarming movie. Relax and have a good laugh with Shazam.

2. Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel was what I expected: a superhero movie mainly for women. You’re not going to see heavy battles here like in Infinity War, but you’re going to get a fine share of entertainment, superhuman fights, and a slice of suspense. There were more jokes than I expected, and overall, just like Shazam, it was a lighthearted movie.

The main character, Carol Danvers, belongs to some outer space civilization, although she has some strange traces of memories that belong to planet Earth. As she goes into missions, she gets the chance to search through those memories with the help of… the villains.

That being said, I enjoyed watching Captain Marvel and it did surprise me with a sudden plot twist. This movie works well when you’re a bit tired and you just want to relax.
